Vilanova i la Geltrú/Province of Barcelona CCLL w Vilanova i la Geltrú/Province of Barcelona CCLL will prioritise a set of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measures following a participatory approach involving citizens, industry, government, and academy representatives.
📅 During a workshop taking place on March 29th, participants will show their preference on a set of proposed EbA to address flooding problems in Torrent de la Piera River stream.
👉 The results will be part of the decision process of the EbA to implement in Vilanova i la Geltrú within SCORE Project.
Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are approaches, actio Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are approaches, actions or processes that use the principles of nature to solve different problems related to territorial and urban management such as adaptation to climate change, resource management, water or air quality. In an increasingly urban society, nature-based solutions are useful, economical and value-added tools in cost savings and local employment generation. In addition, they help to develop cities with a sustainable approach to be resilient, healthy and, ultimately, habitable.

UA is developing for Benidorm CCLL a solution based on a dune implanted in the backshore of the beach with the aim of avoiding flooding on the promenade and beach erosion. For this purpose, a dune ridge will be designed with a sufficient elevation to contain run-up, but at the same time that it does not impede the vision to the beach of the tourists who walk along the promenade. Native vegetation will be planted on this dune to prevent its movement.

The effects of climate change through meteorological changes such as sea level rise or the intensification of coastal storms put local communities at risk. An example close to Benidorm can be found in Denia, where there is no sand left on some beaches in the municipality and the strength of the sea waves hits the houses, destroying part of them.

The SCORE team at ATU Sligo organised their first The SCORE team at ATU Sligo organised their first site visit to Dunmoran Strand on 27th January 2023.

The SCORE project comprises a network of ten Coastal City Living Labs, and Sligo is one of them. The main climate change induced challenges that are being addressed in the Sligo CCLL include coastal erosion and flooding. The three selected study sites to study and mitigate these challenges are Dunmoran, Streedagh and Enniscrone.

The field visit to Dunmoran allowed the CCLL team in Sligo (ATU Sligo and Sligo County Council) to familiarize themselves with the local conditions of the site as well as make acquaintance of the citizens and stakeholders involved.

Through this visit, the team found that Dunmoran has already been making use of hybrid nature-based solutions that include sand dune stabilisation alongside concrete architecture to reduce flooding. Local citizens have been engaged in marram grass planting to ensure sand dune stabilisation. The locals also discussed the challenges of having the dunes affected by sea buckthorn, an invasive species that converts dunes to soil. Ultimately, the SCORE team agreed to join the monthly citizen meetings at Dunmoran to continue to engage the locals in citizen science activities, as well as gather useful data for the project.

Citizen groups in Sligo County have been invited to the Sligo CCLL workshop on March 16th to co-create climate adaptation policy, in collaboration with industry, public sector, civil society and academia.

Stay tuned to learn more! :)
Urban farming is one of the examples of EbAs (Ecos Urban farming is one of the examples of EbAs (Ecosystem-based Adaptation) that provides a valuable resource for sustainable urban development, with several social and environmental benefits. Oeiras Municipality created different Urban Farming programs to involve its citizens, institutions, or associations, in the maintenance of horticultural spaces, promoting the qualified appropriation of public space, and enhancing soil quality, and ecological biodiversity. This activity also promotes the use of traditional and biological agricultural practices; creates environmental protection awareness, increases the use of composting; improves the local landscape, as well as the efficient use of municipal land for recreational, cultural, and environmental education programs. Currently, there are different types of urban farming solutions, distributed along Oeiras neighbourhoods’, Schools, and Institutions.

From an ecological and environmental point of view From an ecological and environmental point of view, urban green spaces have fundamental roles such as increasing the level of water infiltration, purifying the atmosphere and reducing levels of carbon dioxide and also promoting the protection against soil erosion.
Oeiras Municipality in Portugal recognizes the benefits of green spaces in urban environments that are widely available around the city. Pedreira Italiana is one of Oeiras' urban parks near the Algés stream and consists of 22 thousand square meters of green space, with a cycle path, pedestrian routes along the river, fruit trees, and grassland. In the nearby area, there are urban gardens kept by its residents. The Park project was set up to protect the hydrological system, safeguard areas with ecological and landscape interests, create outdoor recreation, promote urban environmental quality and cultural and natural heritage, and prevent soil sealing.

Damages caused by storms surges and floodings are Damages caused by storms surges and floodings are some of the main risks coastal cities have to face. Recently the Benidorm CCLL suffered a storm this last September 18 that caused significant damage to the beach. The CCLL of Benidorm as one of the main touristic cities in Spain , suffers from these climatic events.
The project aims to prevent this through monitoring and EBA (Ecosystem-Based Approach) solutions supported by sophisticated digital technology.

Oeiras Municipality (Portugal) is one of 10 cities Oeiras Municipality (Portugal) is one of 10 cities included in the coastal city ‘living labs’ (CCLLs) network, to address climate change adaptation and resilience.
Oeiras Municipality has already some examples of integration of ecosystem-based approach enhancing climate change adaptation. This is the case of blue-green corridor (EVA, Eixo Verde e Azul), located in Lisbon Metropolitan Area (Portugal). EVA concerns the requalification of the Jamor river and the creation of an interconnected park. The positive impacts generated by EVA include, among others, the re-naturalization of river beds and banks; the rehabilitation of natural and cultural heritage; and the creation of a network of pedestrian and cycling connections. In the long-term, EVA allows an increase of the quality of life and well-being of residents; promotes territorial cohesion, contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions, and; contributes to flooding reduction.
