Context

Piran municipality has 17 kms of coastline. It is located at the south western tip of the Slovenian Riviera, on the Istrian Peninsula.

The coastline includes the 4 municipalities of Ankaran, Koper, Izola and Piran that are plurilingual communities with both Slovene and Italian heritage. The area is a popular holiday destination.

Challenges and risks

  • Autumn/Winter coastal flooding and storm surges
  • Sea level rise
  • Damage to urban infrastructure within the historic city centre due to erosion, sea level rise, and extreme weather events
  • Compromised fresh water access during extreme weather events like summer heatwaves and droughts

Planned Ecosystem Based Approaches (EBAs)

  • Urban design and planning including Ecosystem-Based Approaches that better consider water supply and flows, provide shade and lowered temperatures.
  • Developing environmental and climate change adaptation literacy
  • Participatory engagement and shared citizen and municipal responsibility for the ecological aquatic footprint and sustainable mobility
