📌 SCORE Project Showcased at European Researche 📌 SCORE Project Showcased at European Researchers’ Night 2024 in Oeiras (Portugal)

On 27 September 2024, the SCORE Project was presented at the European Researchers’ Night in Oeiras (Portugal), where visitors had the opportunity to learn how this initiative is supporting coastal cities, including Oeiras, in becoming more resilient to climate change. The event, held at Oeiras Marina, allowed the public to engage with significant scientific and technological projects, including SCORE.

The project team, from Oeiras Municipality and Instituto Superior Técnico, provided insights into how sensors are being used across Oeiras to monitor coastal and inland conditions, and how citizen science activities will involve local schools, fostering awareness and encouraging participation in climate action. In line with the event's theme of "science and inclusion," information about the project was also shared through sign language, ensuring accessibility for all attendees.

Various materials were available for interested participants, including a poster from CCLL Oeiras detailing the project’s implementation in the region, a policy brief from IST offering recommendations on heatwaves in Portugal, and a short comic created by IST to engage younger audiences. Furthermore, brochures and a short film provided an overview of the SCORE project’s objectives and initiatives.

The event offered a valuable opportunity to connect with the community and further raise awareness of efforts to enhance climate resilience.

As a part of the SCORE project, three new automati As a part of the SCORE project, three new automatic weather stations were installed in collaboration with Atlântica University and two secondary schools, Camilo Castelo Branco and Miraflores (Oeiras/Portugal), during the month of July.

These compact stations are now a part of an ongoing effort to monitor local climate conditions in Oeiras. These station's intalation aims to foster citizen science activities, specifically the students and local community involvement.

By actively participating in data collection and analysis, these groups will play a crucial role in enhancing climate resilience in the area.
These stations join the existing network of eight sensors, already deployed under the SCORE project, further strengthening Oeiras’ capacity to respond to climate challenges.

The Oeiras Coastal City Living Lab (Portugal) is s The Oeiras Coastal City Living Lab (Portugal) is set to install three meteorological stations within the Oeiras Municipality. In preparation for this initiative, technical visits have already been carried out to the educational institutions where the stations are to be set up: the Universidade Atlântica and the two secondary schools, Camilo Castelo Branco and Miraflores.

These visits aimed to determine the optimal locations for the equipment, prioritising elevated and unobstructed areas. This accurate positioning will ensure more precise measurement of parameters such as temperature, wind speed and direction, precipitation, barometric pressure, and relative humidity.

The selection of the educational institutions was made during a participatory workshop involving various stakeholders. The decision aimed to ensure a balanced distribution of meteorological stations throughout the area and to explore potential partnerships for citizen science activities. This initiative aims to empower students to drive change for a resilient future by promoting awareness and proactive engagement.
